چکیده

We propose an analysis tool of the finite-length iterative turbo decoding algorithm. The proposed tool is a generalized EXIT chart based on the mutual information transfer characteristics of the extrinsic information in the iterative turbo decoding algorithm. The proposed tool can describe the probabilistic convergence behavior of the iterative decoding algorithm. By using this tool, we obtain the BER estimates of the finitelength turbo codes in the form of a lower bound, which shows a gentle waterfall over a wide waterfall region. The obtained lower bound is in reasonable agreement with the BER obtained by the simulations of the iterative decoding algorithm.

Turbo Multiuser Detection Architectures

The discovery of Turbo Codes in 1996 by Berrou et. al. proved to be a huge boost for the research of channel coding. The Turbo Principle behind turbo codes was found to be applicable in other areas. One of these areas is Multiuser Detection. In this thesis, Turbo Multiuser Detection is investigated in order to answer two main questions. The questions concern the performance gain that is obtaine...

Convergence Analysis of Iterative Threshold Decoding Process

Today the error correcting codes are present in all the telecom standards, in particular the low density parity check (LDPC) codes. The choice of a good code for a given network is essentially linked to the decoding performance obtained by the bit error rate (BER) curves. This approach requires a significant simulation time proportional to the length of the code, to overcome this problem Exit c...

Exit Chart for Iterative Decoding of Product and Concatenated Block Codes

In this paper, we study the convergence behaviour of a new SISO decoder that we have proposed recently in [1]. The exchange of extrinsic information is used to trace the decoding trajectory in the extrinsic information transfer Chart. That allows foreseeing the turbo cliff position. The influence of concatenated scheme as well as different constituent codes on the convergence behaviour is inves...

Scattered EXIT Charts for Finite Length LDPC Code Design

We introduce the Scattered Extrinsic Information Transfer (S-EXIT) chart as a tool for optimizing degree profiles of short length Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes under iterative decoding. As degree profile optimization is typically done in the asymptotic length regime, there is space for further improvement when considering the finite length behavior. We propose to consider the average ex...

Application of Extrinsic Information Transfer Charts to Anticipate Turbo Code Behavior

This paper examines turbo codes that are currently introduced in many international standards, including the UMTS standard for third generation personal communications and the ETSI DVB-T standard for Terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting. The convergence properties of the iterative decoding process associated with a given turbo-coding scheme are estimated using the analysis technique based on ...
